ANZAC Day Services around the Kaipara District 2015

This year ANZAC Day services across the District will be commemorating the centenary of the World War I landings at the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey.
 

Hakaru
The parade will assemble at 10.00am at the Hakaru Returned and Services’ Association. March on at 10.20am. A service will be held at 11.00am followed with a fingerfood lunch beginning around noon. Uniforms and medals should be worn. Open invitation - everyone is welcome.

Maungaturoto
A Dawn Service will be held at the Lawn Cemetery, View Street, Maungaturoto. Assemble at 5.45am, parade at 6.00am. A trumpeter will provide a live rendition of The Last Post, and other music.
This year’s service will include three soldiers in the uniforms of the 1914 Auckland Mounted Rifles, one of whom will be on horseback. There will also be two people in 1914 First Aid Nurses Yeomanry uniforms riding side-saddle.
The ceremony will be followed by the usual light breakfast at the Returned Servicemen’s Association. In addition an ANZAC Day brunch will commence at 11.00am with the kitchen providing a full menu. The ANZAC Ode will be read at noon.
In the RSA clubrooms, a computer and printer will be available so that the public can search for the details of their ancestors involved in WWI. One of the Maungaturoto RSA members has written a programme and researched over 24,000 names, and people are encouraged to come along and search for information on their family members. Access to the computer is free.

Matakohe - ANZAC Day at The Kauri Museum
A combined service of Paparoa Returned Services’ Association and The Kauri Museum will take place at the Museum, with fall-in at the Matakohe War Memorial Hall at 10.30am. The march to the flagstaff will be accompanied by a mounted soldier dressed in a WWI uniform and by WWI nurses in uniform. The march will halt at the Cemetery Flag, the flag will be lowered and The Last Post sounded. The march will continue to the Gun Memorial for wreath-laying by schools, then to the War Memorial Hall for further wreath-laying following which it will continue into the Volunteers Hall of the Museum. A service will then be held during which family or friends will have the opportunity to lay flowers or poppies in the display near photographs of their loved ones. After the service a cup of tea will be served in the Matakohe War Memorial Hall provided by the Committee of the Friends of the Museum. A commemorative display titled “Three Cousins, Defying the Odds, Surviving Gallipoli” will pay tribute to the experiences of the Underwood Family, during the Gallipoli campaign.

Ruawai
Commencing at 10.30am there will be a short march down Ruawai Wharf Road to the flagpole at the Ruawai Tokatoka War Memorial Hall, which will be followed by a commemorative service.

Dargaville
A Dawn Service will be held at the Mount Wesley Returned Services’ Association Cemetery, Old Golf Course Road, Dargaville commencing at 6.00am. The ceremony will be followed by the usual light breakfast.

A commemorative ANZAC Day Service will be held in the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall, Hokianga Road, Dargaville. The Civic Service begins at 10.30am, and will include the laying of poppies, an address by two Speakers, and music performed and chosen by the Kauri Chorus. As usual the wreath laying ceremony will be outside next to the RSA. The service this year will be compered by Kaipara District Council Commissioner John Robertson and led by Dargaville Baptist Minister Gareth Wood, with support from John McLean of the Northern Wairoa RSA.

Dargaville Museum has a special exhibition running from 12 – 28 April which commemorates both World War I and World War II, with a special collection focusing on local families’ involvement. Entrance to this special exhibition is free, and people are encouraged to visit it on their way to or from Dargaville’s ANZAC Day services.
