Farmers of New Zealand Inc. operate a National Peer Farm Management Committee. This committee works closely with MAF Animal Welfare Enforcement and the SPCA. Many farmers and farms who experience animal welfare issues are not the result of neglect. Often the farmer has mental or stress related issues that result in poor management decision making or they just make a mistake then struggle to cope.
The FONZ Committee is made up of experienced and well qualified farmers that provide additional farm management assistance as needed. We have managed a number of farms out of trouble with great success. They are also available for times when tragedy occurs. One of our members was paralysed as a result of a four-wheeler bike accident. In this instance we were able to be on the spot ensuring the farm was managed correctly while arrangements could be made.
We are also involved in staff up-skilling. Instead of traveling to courses we can arrange on farm training for staff. Those that have used this service have seen significant improvement in staff performance and a greater understanding by staff on how the farm operates.
We are also on the scene when a farmer member has a serious animal welfare issue and prosecutions are looming. We ensure the farmers rights are protected and work with the authorities on solutions to short term animal welfare issues and long term farm management. In some cases the Courts have instructed the FONZ Committee to provide an ongoing supervisory role. In some instances jail for the farmer has been a real probability only avoided by our involvement.
To our knowledge we are the only industry organisation that provides this service. If you are having problems contact us immediately.
