I am wanting to use a 5 Lt sprayer which has had roundup in it for spraying copper on fruit trees. What is there about or in the houses cupboards that will help neutralize the Roundup.

Its been rinsed a few times and its probably ok because all the branches are brown bark rather than green but it would be good to know for later in the year.

Thanks heaps Keep warm. :-) Will

12-Aug-10 from Jeff
Hi....roundup is inactivated by soil...muddy water should do it then rinse it out with fairly strong detergent to be on safe side. I would not put the muddy bit thru' the sprayer part tho....just use the det. thru spray nozzle. Hope this helps....Jeff

Copper tends to neutralise roundup so rinsing then fillin your sprayer with copper will neutralise and unltr dilute any residues. Vance.

Hi Beth,
I don't think anyone grows that one now. Check out 'Autumn Moon' which is the closest variety that is grown now. Hope this helps, Vance.

It is time to prune my standard iceburg roses. I made a start and did some of them, but I saw a show (Good Morning) that showed I should have been a lot harder with the pruning. What I have done is more like a heavy dead-heading, than a good hard prune.

That was about 3 weeks ago. So my question is should I re-do them? Or do I leave them as is this year and give them a good going over next year?

Love to hear your advice!

03-Aug-10 from Jeff
Hi don't hesitate...finish them now and you will benefit with the extra flowering...cheers Jeff

We have a problem with growing lawn in 2 places, first being underneath a big pohutukawa due to the shade and the next underneath a big palm where it seems the rain runs of the big leaves onto the lawn where no grass then grows. If anyone has any suggestions on what tyoe of grass to plant or how we could fix the problem that would be wonderful.

Hi....this is a common problem but I think there is a grass seed mixture that is for shady areas....try your garden centre. Try also aerating your soil surface and keeping more water on it without going tooo far and making it ideal for moss. gheers Jeff

I have a couple doozen plants growing in peat pots at the moment. They have worked great for me in the past, though this time not so. When I went to lift up one the other day a whole lot of tiny white bugs started jumping around. They are not white fly, they are not spider mite, mealy bug... They are eating aways at the bottom of the pots and making quite a mess. I am also worried that they mite be damaging the roots.

Any ideas on what they are and/or how to get rid of them would be great!!

I am wishing to establish a 'tropical' garden in a property recently purchased on Auckland's North Shore which is typically solid clay. At the moment the area is planted in just agapanthus. Any ideas of what I can plant to give a tropical look? Flowers are not important.

Hi There, we have a large plum tree that really needs to be pruned back this year. I was wondering if anyone could tell me when the best time to do this is and how hard we can prun it for it to still produce next season. Thanks.

boxcutter@orcon.net.nz

13-Apr-10 from Vance
Hi Antoinette,
Leave it until spring until directly after flowering. This will maximise pollination and ensure you have fruit, but also remember to paint the cuts larger than 1cm diameter to keep out disease.
Vance.

Hi everyone, we have a large (about 8-10m tall) Phoenix palm in our front garden that we want to remove. There are a lot of similar trees on TradeMe, but they don't seem to attract much interest. Do these trees really have much resale value?

You would have to ask one of those trendy landscapers.
Along the coastal drive at Mt Maunganui there are many that were planted as a memorial to the developments in the 1990's, several on a slight lean which will eventually show a crooked trunk, maybe reflecting the whole concept, or at least some of the developers.
I have a feeling they are listed as a banned plant in the Auckland region, meaning you are not supposed to sell them due to their perceived weed status. Vance.

I am looking for a garden designer/landscape architect in Auckland who is not obsessed with sub-tropical and minimalist gardens! Every website I have looked at has portfolios of these types of gardens but none including actual old fashioned flowers(like Chris Beardshaw's gardens for example). Can anyone recommend a designer who is not so influenced by fashion?
