New Zealand's largest coastal steam fleet. The Northern Steamship Company was established in 1881 by Captain McGregor and several other steamship owners. Over the period of 100 years the company owned in excess of 120 steamships serving most ports of the North Island.
Steam vessels of our yesteryear had no electronic plotters or radar equipment,
so skippers relied on the well-known dog bark to guide their ships
into fog-bound estuaries.
Eliza Hobson at the Stone Store Basin.Take this 1 hour return trip.
Ply the waterways where small steamers of Eliza's size
took large booms of kauri logs to Opito Bay.
Large steamers would then take the logs to the Kauri Timber Company
sawmill which was based at the viaduct basin on Auckland's waterfront
