Many years ago when I had my florist shop in Hamilton, well-known florist Denzil Philip sent me a plant of a new Hellebore, Hellebore white magic and said "you can't live without this". As soon as it flowered his comments were proven correct and we ordered a box of them and we have taken some with us ever since. Who could have known that this Hellebore would be one of the parents of a new yellow Hellebore?
Well-known identities (now retired) in the sorld of Florists, Pat and Keith Stuart have worked for 20 years to produce this new plant. It has been very wet in Coromandel Town and even wetter on the hills so my plant is waiting for the sunshine to open fully but already is looking very exciting - really good stem length, (which if white magic has a failing it would be the shortness of its stem). Big fat buds and a really big plant which must have had a real shock being lifted from the ice and snow of Central Otago and being couriered to Coromandel its new home.
Although these plants retail at $50 each, they look wonderful and what an ideal birthday/fathers day/early Christmas present for the up to the minute gardener who has everything!
Florist perspective:
The Stuarts tell me the flower stems will be between 50cm to 1m tall when fully mature. I am sure this will be a real eye-opener, new cut flower for florists as well as all the uses of its parents H. sternii and white magic. I hope it multiplies quickly for commercial growers and hope to have some to use at our Waikato Polytch Floristry students display in October.
