T?n? koutou katoa
MEIT has been charged with restoring Maungatautari to the lush and vibrant mountain it once was – the air filled with birdsong and the sweet scent of our varied plant life.
Maungatautari is truly a taonga and with our help it may once again be the mountain that our forefathers knew.

Mana Whenua Report
The recent World Rowing Championships at Karapiro provided an opportunity to promote the work of the Maungatautari Trust through the Maori culture and heritage site . MEIT booklets were available for sale and display boards were also set up. Income generated from the book sales is being returned to the trust.
Currently ManaWhenua representatives are considering a research application to remove ten specimens of carabid beetle found on Maungatautari to be used in a comparative study with species found in the Coramandel area.
Mana Whenua are also engaged in negotiations with Ng?ti Maniapoto and Ng?ti Tuwharetoa for the translocation of giant weta from Mahoenui and k?kako from Pureora.
On Tuesday, 16 November 2010, kiwi chicks were returned to Tongariro. The birds were collected from both northern and southern enclosures and accompanied to their release point in Tongariro by DOC staff, following mihimihi and karakia at P?hara Marae.
