  • Steeped in history, Ohaeawai (historically called Taiamai) is situated at the junction of State Highways 1 & 12, on what is locally known as 'The Crossroads'.  Just as in times past, this apparently sleepy Village is still a major stop for locals and visitors alike.

    OUR COMMUNITY

Still a dominant feature of the area today, the historic Ohaeawai Hotel is a favourite gathering place for locals, residents from nearby settlements and visitors alike.  You will often find the friendly, well known characters of the area engaged in a good old fashioned chin wag, a game of pool or darts, or maybe just contemplating the day.

The Ohaeawai Community has a keen interest in sporting competition, fielding both men's and women's rugby and touch rugby teams, along with a women's netball team.  There are also 18 hole and 9 hole golf courses very close by, so it's not surprising that many Ohaeawai folk enjoy this pastime.

For those of us who prefer less strenuous activities there is Ludbrook House, the beautiful, historic and long-standing home of the Ludbrook family, which is also home to a constantly changing art gallery, open to the public.

Ohaeawai also boasts its own potter, Christine Purdom.  She has unique, NZ flavoured, functional and fashionable, handcrafted ceramic and pottery tableware.  Her studio/gallery is well worth a visit.

The local Playcentre and Ohaeawai Primary School have in recent years increased in size due to a boost the population.  Ohaeawai Primary School is a very progressive successful school, focusing on ALL of the children....TOP SCHOOL. Waimate North Christian School, on the site of the original 1885 state school, was re-opened in 1994 to provide an alternative choice of schooling to the Community's children.

Whether you're passing through or staying a while longer, Ohaeawai is interesting in the present day as well as in its history.
