Giant Kauri Tree Tane MahutaThis area of Northland has a rich and varied history.

This ancient land was indeed cut off from the rest of the world with many species unique to these shores.  Before the arrival of man this land was covered with ancient Kauri trees (second in size only to the giant sequioa of California) with giant Moa birds nearly 4 metres tall roaming the forrests.

With the arrival of the first sea faring peoples and later colonialists from the old world; the land took a dramatic change.  This land has been richly sort after as it abounded in food and even today is a major agricultural producer.
