It matter little whether you are a large operator or a small lifestyle block owner biosecurity is important to you. While new Zealand has its problems with many pests that are well known to most of us who work the land there many pests and diseases that occur overseas that could pose a threat to our animals, our land holdings, and our livelihood.
Once a pest is established is is generally difficult if not impossible to eradicate. Its hits us hard on two fronts - the cost to productivity and the extra costs in attempting to manage it. MAF provide a fact sheet that describe the issue and our responsibilities.
FONZ works on regional pest management strategies and with the Animal health Board. We advocate biosecurity issues at a central government level when as required. However, there is a lot you can do yourself. Develop your own pest management strategy for you farm and get to know whether there is a landcare group in your area. Contact your local Regional Council and find out what assistance they can provide you under their pest management strategy. Many assist with provision of herbicides and possum baits and also they are a good source of advice.
